What Is Joyful Noise?
In 2024, Hurricane Helene tore through Asheville’s River Arts District and changed it overnight.
Studios flooded. Restaurants closed.
Gathering places — the kind that hold memories — were lost.
But this neighborhood has always been built by people who make things. Artists. Brewers. Chefs. Musicians. Neighbors who believe in showing up for one another. And when the water receded, so did any doubt that the River Arts District would rise again.
Joyful Noise Listening Lounge and Kitchen is part of that next chapter.
Located at 37 Paynes Way in the heart of the River Arts District, Joyful Noise was created to give people a place to slow down and truly be present — with music, with food, and with each other.
Our inspiration reaches beyond Asheville.
A Listening Experience
The Legacy of the HiFi Listening Bar
HiFi listening bars first took root in Japan after World War II. Records were expensive and hard to come by, so people gathered in small cafés and bars to listen together. Owners invested in high-quality sound systems and curated record collections so entire communities could experience albums they couldn’t afford on their own. Out of scarcity came something beautiful: rooms full of people sitting shoulder to shoulder, hearing music in full together.
That tradition still thrives across Japan today — spaces devoted not to background noise, but to intentional listening.

Where Great Music Meets a New Beginning
A New Chapter in the River Arts District
Joyful Noise is rooted in a deep love for Asheville and the power of shared experience. We opened Hi-Wire Brewing in 2013 with a simple idea: to create a place where people could gather, slow down, and feel connected. Over the years, that idea has been tested in ways we never could have imagined. We navigated the uncertainty of COVID, and more recently, the devastation of Hurricane Helene—experiences that challenged us not just as business owners, but as members of this community.
Through it all, one thing became clear: what we’re building has never been just about beer. It’s about people, place, and the relationships that carry us forward.
Our next chapter is rooted in that belief. We’re opening a vinyl listening bar in the River Arts District—one of the areas hit hardest—because we believe in showing up, especially when it’s difficult. This space is about intention: slowing down, listening deeply, and creating room for connection again.
We’re also proud to be partnering with a chef and a coffee company who, like us, were deeply impacted. These collaborations are more than business decisions—they’re a reflection of shared resilience and a commitment to rebuilding together. There’s something powerful in choosing to invest in each other, in this neighborhood, and in what comes next.
This project is our way of honoring where we’ve been, and contributing to where we’re going. Not just reopening, but reimagining what it means to gather, to support one another, and to be part of a community that refuses to give up.

A living-room atmosphere, thoughtfully crafted food, and music played the way it was meant to be heard

The space is designed to feel like stepping into our living room — mid-century warmth, clean lines, an atmosphere that invites you to settle in. Someone else turns the records. Someone else cooks the food. You just arrive.
The food menu offers small, shareable plates with European and Asian influence. While we’re not a traditional sit-down restaurant, you can easily build a full evening here — course by course, side by side with the music.
Joyful Noise is not about rushing. It’s about staying through the B-side. Putting your phone away. Letting a record play all the way through. Remembering what it feels like to sit shoulder to shoulder with strangers and realize you’re not strangers for long.
